Oak Park Historic District May Expand

Oak Park’s Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District may be expanding. In 2009 the National Register of Historic Places expanded, but Oak Park’s own district did not. The national designation offers no protection from demolition, so residents want to expand the local historic district, which many feel has somewhat arbitrary boundaries, to preserve the character of the neighborhood.

The new boundaries would add about 500 residences to the 1,500 already covered.

The Oak Park designation only affects the exterior of the homes, not interior modifications.

A public hearing will be held Monday, March 21 at 7PM at the Oak Park Public Library.
